Dermatofibroma
Dermatofibromas are benign (non-cancerous) skin growths that commonly appear as small, firm nodules and are usually hard or rubbery to the touch.. They most frequently occur on the legs, arms, or upper back of adults, particularly women.
The Mole Institute’s team of physicians in Hamilton offer dermatofibroma removal using specialized minimal scarring techniques. We provide care for women and men who come to us from Ancaster, Stoney Creek, Mississauga, and surrounding cities.
What causes dermatofibromas?
Dermatofibromas are often associated with minor trauma to the skin, such as insect bites, shaving cuts, or ingrown hairs. However, many develop without any obvious preceding incident. The exact cause is not fully understood, but they are generally considered reactive processes in response to skin injuries rather than true neoplasms (benign tumors). A characteristic “dimple sign” can often be observed when squeezed from the sides; this occurs because the center of the nodule tends to dimple inward. Certain risk factors like an impaired immune system, autoimmune diseases, or rare genetic predispositions may increase the likelihood of developing multiple dermatofibromas

What to expect from a removal procedure?
When considering the removal of dermatofibromas, it is important to understand that these benign skin growths generally do not require treatment. However, if a dermatofibroma causes discomfort or is located in an area where it may be cosmetically bothersome, several procedures can be used for its removal. The most common are:
- Excision: The dermatofibroma and a small margin of surrounding skin is cut out to reduce recurrence. Recovery is minimal, with some swelling or bruising that should resolve in a few days.
- Shave Removal: The lesion is shaved level with the surrounding skin, often under local anesthetic. Stitches are usually not required, but because deeper portions may remain, the bump can return over time.
After removal, you might experience some scarring, but the team at Mole Institute can help manage expectations. Pain or discomfort should be alleviated, and cosmetic appearance may improve depending on the initial size of the lesion.
What is recovery like for dermatofibroma removal?
Recovery from the removal of dermatofibromas is generally straightforward, depending on the procedure used. You might experience some swelling or bruising that typically resolves within a few days. Post-procedure care involves keeping the treated area clean and dry, and avoiding physical activities that could cause trauma. Regular follow-ups with Mole Institute can ensure proper healing and address any concerns. Overall, recovery is minimal and most people return to normal activities quickly.
